ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born into a polygamous household in the rural village of Loro, Oyam District, David Okello’s journey embodies resilience, dedication, and the transformative power of education. Growing up, he traversed the rocky path of primary education barefoot, a sign of the challenges that marked his early years. However, it was his solid
commitment to learning that propelled him forward. Despite the hurdles, David excelled academically, earning the opportunity to don shoes as he advanced to secondary school. His academic prowess caught the attention of educators, leading to his admission to the esteemed Makerere University, where he embarked on his journey to become a medical doctor
After rigorous postgraduate training and a brief tenure as a lecturer at Makerere University Medical School, David’s career took an international turn when he joined the World Health Organization (WHO). Over nearly two decades, he traveled across continents as an international health expert, serving as WHO country representative in several African nations and leading key public health initiatives. He held significant roles, including Director of AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (ATM) Programs at the WHO Regional Office for Africa in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo; Regional Advisor on Health Research, Policy, Planning, and Coordination (RPC); and Coordinator of the WHO Inter-Country Support Team for East and Southern Africa, based in Harare, Zimbabwe, where he directed tailored support to countries in this sub-region.
